Year 13 Geography A level students visited a regeneration project currently being undertaken by Keepmoat, in Luton. The company have taken on the job of regenerating the Purley centre in the Marsh Farm area of the town. Phase 1 of the building is well under way. The students got the opportunity to go on site after a health & safety briefing . They all got kitted up with steel capped boots and hard hats and had a tour around the building. They learnt about how successful bids are won through having the right design as well as meeting expected sustainability targets. The client is Luton Borough Council and the buildings are both for retail and residential purposes. They meet energy efficient targets and 99% of all waste materials are recycled. It was a fantastic opportunity for the geographers to go and have a look at the practice they learn about in their textbooks. Phase 2 of the regeneration will take place next – the poorly rundown area of the market area and shops across from the car park will also get a much desired new look. Thanks to Keepmoat for the guided tour and allowing the trip to take place.
