On 2nd March, Hollie Sturgess from ASK (Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge) came into college to facilitate a Mock Assessment Centre workshop to prepare and advise students about this process which forms part of the final stages of applying for apprenticeships. Students who attended are currently applying for a range of degree apprenticeships with various companies.
 
Students were given a group task to create the tallest free standing sturdiest tower using straws, paper and selotape and had to balance an inflated balloon.  Students were required to think creatively, to think outside of the box, think logically, use problem solving, communication skills and working in a team.

When students are invited to attend an assessment centre as part of the recruitment process of applying for apprenticeships, employers are looking at how candidiates work in a team, how they lead, communicate, problem solve and possess good listening skills.
 
An assessment centre is a multi-faceted recruitment process designed to assess a group of candidates across a range of competencies in simulated scenarios. The assessment centre is a recruitment process that combines a range of activities to compare the candidates and uses a fair way of assessing the best candidate and ensure they are hired.  It allows candidates to showcase and demonstrate their transferable skills. 

Hollie advised students to think like an employer and assess the peers strengths and areas for development as well as who they would hire if they were the employer. She asked them to consider who was worth investing in and to consider their people skills, communication skills and time managment skills.
 
As part of N6’s carees education it is really important that all students are offered opportunitites to gain information, advise and support with making informed decisions about their future careers when they leave N6.

  • Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
  • A school’s careers programme should actively seek to challenge stereotypical thinking and raise aspirations.
  • Schools should keep systematic records of the individual advice given to each pupil, and subsequent agreed decisions. All pupils should have access to these records to support their career development. 
  • Schools should collect and retain accurate data for each pupil on their education, training or employment destinations for at least three years after they leave the school.
