The Sutton Trust is an organisation that provides free summer schools and week-long events during the Summer for year 12 students who may not have the access to opportunities around their future career or subject. The programme focuses on students from lower income families, aiming for high achieving students to secure a placement at a top university to experience university life.  All fees for the Summer school are paid for by the Trust, including transport, accommodation, food and any expenses involved with the week.

There are multiple programmes available to apply for. UK Summer Schools gives students a taste of university, with lectures from top academics in their subject and personal statement workshops with important advice. The week involves additional activities outside of education; some students last year were successful in their application and were given a placement at different universities. On the 25th March the apprenticeship Summer school opens for applications and covers what it is like to pursue a degree-level apprenticeship.

One student had this to stay about their week at UCL in London: I was lucky enough to get to attend multiple law sessions from top speakers in the country. One of the speakers had been heavily involved in the construction of Canary Wharf in London, which is now highly regarded as the home of banking in the UK.

Outside of the sessions we had multiple activities, all of which were paid for by the Trust, including a boat tour and an optional activity night where you could choose to participate in an escape room or attend the musical Wicked. For law in particular there was a trip to the Supreme Court where we were given a tour of the building and some historical insight into cases that had presided in the court.

Our transport around London was paid for through an Oyster card and while the week I attended was during the heatwave, all the university buildings had air conditioning which was a plus.

I would definitely recommend at least applying to the programme. Once you have finished the week the Sutton Trust gives you access to an Alumni (graduate) programme where you can sign up to events and network with current professionals who have undergone the programme years before you.
